Animal Assisted Therapy

This is a goal-directed intervention utilized by an occupational therapist. The therapist has special expertise to incorporate the therapy dog into the sessions. The therapy dog is intentionally used to facilitate goal attainment by serving as the motivator, providing a unique sensory experience, and being the modality for skill development. Some examples included blowing treats to a dog through a straw to increase oral motor control and strength, practicing buttoning or shoe tying skills on the dog’s jacket, or practicing cooking skills by making a treat for the dog.
